A motorist has been sentenced to six months in prison after driving at more than 115 mph (185 km/h) on a Nottinghamshire road — with a child sitting alongside him in the vehicle, ca.news.yahoo.com reports.

Johnpaul Allen, 32, of Park Hall Road, Mansfield Woodhouse, was behind the wheel of a Range Rover Sport on the A60 between Worksop and Cuckney on 25 May when he swerved past an unmarked police car, narrowly missing an oncoming vehicle. Nottinghamshire Police said Allen had no idea the vehicle he overtook belonged to officers.

Officers then gave chase, reaching speeds exceeding 115 mph to keep pace with Allen. After briefly slowing near average speed cameras close to Cuckney, Allen accelerated to up to 75 mph through Warsop — a 30 mph zone in a built-up area. He was eventually brought to a stop and detained.

PC Ky Kirk described the sequence of events: "Allen clearly had no idea he was overtaking an unmarked police vehicle when he carried out the first dangerous manoeuvre and almost collided with an oncoming car. We then had to travel at speeds well in excess of 100 mph to keep up with him as he drove recklessly along a major A-road through the county."

Kirk added: "He put countless drivers, pedestrians and other road users at risk that evening, not to mention the child who was alongside him in the Land Rover."

Allen pleaded guilty to dangerous driving. On 15 September, Nottingham Crown Court sentenced him to six months in custody and imposed a 16-month driving ban.
