Cleveland man sentenced to nearly 13 years for drug trafficking and firearm offences

Cleveland repeat drug offender jailed for 155 months

Jermain S. Cottrell, a 30-year-old Cleveland man with multiple prior drug trafficking convictions, has been sentenced to 155 months — nearly 13 years — in federal prison, cleveland19.com reports, citing a Department of Justice press release.

U.S. District Judge Donald C. Nugent handed down the sentence on Monday after Cottrell pleaded guilty in June to federal drug and firearm charges. Judge Nugent also ordered three years of supervised release and the forfeiture of Cottrell's weapon and ammunition.

Court documents detail that Lakewood Police Officers were in the process of handcuffing Cottrell when he shoved several small bags of narcotics into his mouth. He spat them out while being transported to hospital. Forensic analysis identified the substances as cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, fluorofentanyl and fentanyl.

A firearm fitted with an extended magazine was found in the driver's side door of the vehicle Cottrell had been driving at the time of his arrest.

According to the DOJ, Cottrell's criminal record includes drug trafficking convictions in 2018, 2020 and 2021.
