The Drug Enforcement Administration in Los Angeles is actively working to establish the full nature of the relationship between Panettiere and her dealer, with investigators attempting to trace the fatal pill back to him. The DEA in South Carolina is also conducting a parallel investigation alongside local law enforcement.

When first responders arrived at the condominium where Panettiere and her boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, were staying, Hickerson handed over a bag containing her prescription medications.
