A Lincoln police captain and her partner have been formally charged with misdemeanor child abuse after allegedly leaving their 2-year-old child locked in a van while fishing at Pawnee Lake, 1011now.com reports.

Capt. Mayde McGuire, 54, was off-duty when the incident occurred in late August. Her partner, Mary Tobiassen, 49, was also present. A passerby spotted the toddler in the van and alerted authorities after the child appeared distressed.

The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office investigated and determined the child had been left unattended in the vehicle for a minimum of 28 minutes. Sheriff Terry Wagner noted the outside temperature at the time stood at 78 degrees. The toddler was not reported to have sustained any injuries.

McGuire submitted a preliminary breath test during the investigation, which returned a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.108, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office.

Charging documents indicate both McGuire and Tobiassen each face one count of misdemeanor child abuse. The charge carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Both are scheduled for arraignment at a Lancaster County court on 30 September at 1:30 p.m.
