Delaware State Police arrested a 17-year-old student from Newark after a loaded handgun was recovered from his backpack at Glasgow High School on Monday afternoon, dsp.delaware.gov reported on Tuesday.

At approximately 1:00 p.m. on 14 September 2026, the School Resource Officer (SRO) stationed at Glasgow High School, 1901 South College Avenue, responded to reports of a fight in one of the school's hallways. The SRO and school staff intervened and separated the students involved, including the 17-year-old.

During the subsequent investigation, the SRO learned that the teenager had removed his backpack before the altercation began, and that the bag was reported to contain marijuana. A search of the backpack led to the discovery of a loaded handgun alongside a small quantity of marijuana.

The student was taken into custody and brought to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the fight. No other injuries were reported. Following his discharge from hospital, he was transported to Troop 2, where he was formally charged with firearm and related offences.

The teenager was subsequently arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court and committed to the Department of Services for Children, Youth, and their Families on a cash bond of $87,000.

Any individual charged in this release is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
