New York trooper shoots and kills man at Cairo campground after gun threat

A man was shot dead by a New York State Police trooper at a campground in Cairo on 14 September after allegedly pointing a handgun at officers.

A man was shot and killed by a New York State Police trooper at Whip O Will Campground on Route 31 in the Town of Cairo on the evening of 14 September, wnyt.com reports.

Troopers were dispatched at approximately 8:22 p.m. following a report of an assault involving two males at the campsite located at 644 Route 31. Officers arrived to find one of the men with a head injury; that victim directed troopers to a nearby camper.

A male subject then emerged from the camper holding what appeared to be a black handgun in his right hand. According to New York State Police, the subject pointed the apparent firearm at a trooper and continued advancing toward him. The trooper discharged his duty weapon and struck the subject.

Troopers immediately rendered medical aid and called for emergency medical services. EMS personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene.

The identities of all individuals involved are being withheld pending notification of next of kin and will be released in a subsequent update.

The New York Attorney General's Office and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Catskill are jointly investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact New York State Police at 845-344-5300.

Whip-O-Will Campsites issued a statement on Facebook following the incident. "The Whip-O-Will family is saddened by the tragic events involving a transient camper on September 14th," the statement read. "We are grateful that all of our seasonal Whip-O-Will family is safe and thank law enforcement for their quick response. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families that lost a loved one."
