A 17-year-old male student was arrested on Monday after police discovered a loaded firearm in his backpack during a routine security screening at the Queens School for Career Development in Jamaica, qns.com reports.

Officers from the 113th Precinct responded to a 911 call shortly after 2 p.m. on Sept. 14, following the discovery of the weapon at the school located at 142-10 Linden Blvd. The student was taken into custody as a person of interest. No injuries were reported.

Following questioning at the 113th Precinct, the teenager was formally arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon — specifically, a loaded firearm on school grounds.

The Queens School for Career Development is part of NYC Special Schools – District 75, which provides specialised education for students with disabilities across grades 9 through 12. qns.com said it had contacted the city's Department of Education for comment but had not yet received a response at the time of publication.
