Teen driver flees police, destroys multiple parked cars in South Los Angeles crash

A police chase in South Los Angeles ended in a violent crash early Wednesday, with a teen driver destroying several parked cars on 114th Street.

Residents of a South Los Angeles neighbourhood woke Wednesday morning to find their vehicles destroyed after an overnight police chase ended in a violent multi-car crash, abc7.com reports.

Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department began pursuing a car for reckless driving on Imperial Highway at around 1 a.m. Shortly into the chase, the driver — described as a teenager — missed a curve and continued straight down 114th Street at speed.

Surveillance footage from a nearby home captured the moment the vehicle slammed into the back of a parked car, launched airborne, and then ploughed into several other vehicles along the street.

The impact was severe. One car, belonging to resident Hector Gutierrez, had its entire roof sheared off. A sedan came to rest partially embedded inside the SUV of neighbour Sheyda Morales.

"I heard the crash first, then I heard the sirens," Gutierrez told abc7.com, noting it was the third time his car had been struck in the area.

Morales pointed to poor lighting as a persistent hazard on the street. "There's very little light. So at night time it's worse. Especially if you're a drunk driver or you're coming just quick," she said.

Despite the extensive damage across multiple vehicles, the suspect was the only person injured. He was taken into custody with a fractured nose. Whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the incident remains unclear, according to the LAPD.

Local residents say crashes of this nature occur with troubling frequency in the neighbourhood.
