A 17-year-old girl was arrested Thursday after fleeing a welfare check in Kingston, Massachusetts, and crashing head-on into a sedan in Plymouth, leaving the other driver with serious injuries, whdh.com reports.

Kingston police responded just before noon to a family's home to conduct a welfare check on the girl. During that check, she took off in a family member's car without authorisation.

Officers attempted to stop the teenager, who was unlicensed and driving erratically. The pursuit was subsequently called off over public safety concerns, Kingston police said.

Shortly afterwards, Plymouth police and fire crews were dispatched to the junction of Plympton Road (Route 80) and Carver Road, near the West Plymouth Square shopping plaza, following reports of a serious collision. Arriving units found an SUV and a sedan had collided head-on.

Kingston police confirmed the SUV driver was the same 17-year-old they had earlier pursued.

The adult male driver of the sedan was "heavily entrapped and had to be freed by firefighters using hydraulic extrication tools," according to Plymouth Fire Chief Neil Foley and Plymouth Police Chief Dana Flynn. The man was subsequently airlifted by medical helicopter to a Boston trauma centre with serious injuries.

The teenager initially fled the crash scene on foot but was located a short time later. She was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being arrested by Plymouth police.

The Plymouth Police Department is investigating the crash, and criminal charges from both Kingston and Plymouth police are pending.
