Peel police arrest man linked to 71 vehicle break-ins in Mississauga

Peel Regional Police have charged a 34-year-old man of no fixed address with dozens of offences following an extensive investigation into 71 vehicle break-ins across Mississauga, Toronto Sun Crime reports.

The incidents took place during the early morning hours of September 3 and September 6, targeting neighbourhoods throughout the city. Investigators allege the suspect gained entry to vehicles either by smashing windows or by exploiting unlocked doors, stealing valuables from each. No vehicles were taken and all were unoccupied at the time, but the spree caused significant property damage and financial losses for local residents.

Cory Lowden, 34, was arrested and charged with 46 counts of attempt to commit an indictable offence, 16 counts of theft under $5,000, 15 counts of mischief over $5,000, and one count of theft over $5,000. He was also arrested on two outstanding warrants connected to separate fraud investigations and was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah said in a statement that the arrest carries a deliberate signal. "This arrest sends a clear message that individuals who target our communities will be aggressively pursued and held accountable," Duraiappah said. "Through determined investigative work, our officers were able to identify and arrest a suspect believed to be responsible for these incidents. Thank you to our community members who reported these crimes, allowing our officers to link them together."

Investigators are now examining possible links between Lowden and similar vehicle crime cases in Halton, Toronto, York, and Waterloo regions as they work to establish the full scope of the alleged activity.

The arrest comes one week after four teenagers were charged with 229 offences under Project Magenta, a separate investigation into stolen vehicles and commercial break-and-enters across Durham Region and the GTA between June and September.
