Youth seriously injured after jumping from Cranbrook school roof, IIO notified

A young person was seriously injured Wednesday morning after jumping off the roof of Mount Baker Secondary in Cranbrook, British Columbia, cbc.ca reports. B.C.'s Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has been notified of the incident.

According to RCMP, officers were called to a Cranbrook home at approximately 7:51 a.m. MT following a report that a young male had allegedly threatened individuals at the residence with a knife before fleeing on foot.

Roughly 10 minutes later, police located the suspect on the roof of the nearby school. Mount Baker Secondary was evacuated as a precaution. Just after 10 a.m., the youth jumped from the roof and sustained serious injuries.

"First responders immediately provided medical assistance before the individual was transported to hospital," RCMP said in a release. No other injuries were reported.

The IIO is notified whenever police-involved incidents result in serious harm or death, regardless of whether officer wrongdoing is alleged.

Classes at Mount Baker Secondary have since resumed. Supports and counselling are being made available through the school and the local Foundry organization for those affected by the incident.

Kootenay-Rockies MLA Pete Davis, who says his son attends the school, issued a statement expressing gratitude toward first responders and staff. "It's difficult to hear that a young person was going through such a tough moment," Davis wrote. "I truly hope they get the help and support they need."
