Winnipeg police officer charged with sexual assault and strangulation of intimate partner

A 20-year WPS veteran in his 40s was arrested Wednesday after officers caught him assaulting a woman inside her home. He faces multiple charges including sexual assault and choking.

Winnipeg officer in custody after domestic assault arrest

A Winnipeg Police Service officer has been arrested and charged with multiple offences against an intimate partner, Global News Crime reports.

The man, in his 40s, has served with the WPS for two decades. West district patrol officers responded to a domestic-related call shortly after 10:18 p.m. on Wednesday and, upon arriving at the woman's residence, allegedly observed the officer assaulting her inside the home. He was taken into custody at the scene.

Police allege the officer broke into the woman's home, threatened to kill her, and assaulted her. Charges laid against him include sexual assault, assault by choking or strangling against an intimate partner, overcoming resistance by attempting to choke or suffocate another person, and breaking and entering to commit assault. Two counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm were also filed.

The officer's name has not been released. WPS stated in a news release that the decision was made "to protect the identity of the victim." The woman received medical attention at the scene; police did not confirm whether she was taken to hospital.

The man remains in police custody.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba, the province's civilian police watchdog, has been notified of the allegations, according to WPS.
