OPP releases suspect description in Deep River stabbing, victim a woman

Ontario Provincial Police have released a description of the suspect wanted in connection with a stabbing in Deep River, Ont., cbc.ca reports — one week after the attack left a woman in hospital in life-threatening condition.

The assault took place on the afternoon of September 9 in the McElligott Drive area of the eastern Ontario town near Pembroke. Residents were ordered to shelter in place for roughly 20 hours following what investigators described as a "serious assault."

In an update issued Wednesday evening, OPP described the suspect as a tall, thin male with white or light skin. He was last seen wearing light-coloured pants and a dark-coloured hoodie. Police are urging anyone who encounters a person matching that description not to approach them, but to contact OPP directly with any information.

Investigators also addressed a separate lead that had been circulating in the community. During the investigation, police received information about an individual in construction clothing who had reportedly been in the area at the time of the incident. OPP have since determined that person was not involved in the assault, and issued the clarification to counter misinformation spreading locally.

No suspect has been identified. Police said residents should expect a continued heightened officer presence in the area as the investigation proceeds.
