Man fatally shot by Edmonton police after shooting woman and infant in Donsdale home

Alberta's police watchdog has been called in to investigate after Edmonton officers fatally shot a man in the city's west end on Sunday morning, Global News Crime reports.

The Edmonton Police Service responded around 10 a.m. to a residence near Donsdale Drive and 45 Avenue following reports that a man had forced his way into the home and shot a woman and an infant.

Officers arrived in the Lessard Road area to find witnesses and the injured at the scene. Police then established containment around the property.

"During this time, the adult male suspect opened the front door with a firearm in his possession. Officers issued verbal direction to the man; however, he did not comply. Three officers then discharged their firearms," according to a news release issued Sunday evening by the Edmonton Police Service.

The suspect, a 36-year-old man, was arrested but died at the scene. Two women and an infant were transported to hospital, all with non-life-threatening injuries. No officers were injured in the incident.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, known as ASIRT, has been notified and will lead the investigation. The agency is responsible for reviewing police-involved incidents that result in serious injury or death, in order to determine whether officer misconduct occurred.
