Two Toronto women face charges after blocking traffic near PM Carney's Investment Summit dinner at the AGO. A separate bank robbery in Oshawa also led to an arrest.
Arrests at protest outside Art Gallery of Ontario as Carney hosts summit dinner
Two Toronto women were arrested Monday evening outside the Art Gallery of Ontario, where Prime Minister Mark Carney's Investment Summit private dinner was underway, Toronto Sun Crime reports.
A small group of protesters gathered in the McCaul St. and Dundas St. W. area and "deliberately blocked the road, impeding police officers and police vehicles," according to a Toronto Police press release.
Shelly Agius, 44, was charged with mischief by interfering with the lawful enjoyment of property and obstructing a peace officer after ignoring repeated police directions to clear the roadway.
Lily Phan, 49, was arrested and charged with obstructing a peace officer and assaulting a peace officer after allegedly attacking an officer and attempting to interfere with the arrests.
Elderly man robbed on porch in west-end distraction theft
In a separate incident, Toronto Police have charged a 22-year-old man in connection with a distraction theft targeting an elderly resident in the Rockcliffe Blvd. and Alliance Ave. area on Aug. 30 at approximately 1:20 p.m.
According to police, a man driving a white Chevrolet — accompanied by a female passenger in the rear seat — pulled up near the victim's home. "The female passenger lured the elderly victim off the porch to the vehicle and stole his jewelry, while replacing it with fake jewelry," police said.
Both suspects fled the scene. The victim was not physically harmed.
Roberto Carlos Ghiocel, 22, of Toronto, was arrested on Sept. 11 and charged with robbery and participating in or contributing to a criminal organization. Investigators seized a quantity of fake jewelry following searches of an address and a vehicle.
Police have not identified the female suspect and have released a photo of Ghiocel along with images of seized items, as they believe additional victims may exist. Bank robbery at downtown Oshawa CIBC branch
Durham Regional Police responded Monday morning to a robbery at a CIBC branch at 2 Simcoe St. S. in Oshawa, after a man approached an employee and claimed to have a firearm while demanding cash.
The employee complied and handed over approximately $4,000 in Canadian currency. The suspect fled the area but was located and arrested by officers without incident shortly afterward.
Darren Lazaruik, 56, of no fixed address, was charged with robbery, failure to comply with a probation order, and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
