Winnipeg man charged after forensic analysis links him to July sexual assault

A 20-year-old man has been charged in connection with a sexual assault that took place near Picardy Place in Winnipeg in July, Global News Crime reports.

The Winnipeg Police Service identified the suspect through forensic analysis and subsequently obtained an arrest warrant. The man was already in custody at the Headingley Correctional Institution on an unrelated matter and was re-arrested Tuesday.

He faces charges of sexual assault and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.

The charges relate to the July 19 assault of a woman who was walking on Toronto Street near Picardy Place. According to an earlier police news release, she was grabbed by a stranger who threatened her and pulled her into a nearby alcove. The man allegedly choked, sexually assaulted and robbed her before fleeing.
