Winnipeg police pursuit ends in multi-vehicle crash, woman seriously hurt

A suspect fleeing Winnipeg police in a Ford Bronco triggered a chain of collisions, injuring a woman from a struck civilian vehicle. Manitoba's IIU is investigating.

Manitoba's police watchdog has opened an investigation after a woman sustained a fractured rib and concussion during a police pursuit in Winnipeg last Friday, Global News Crime reports.

The incident began around 1:45 p.m. when a concerned citizen called the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) to report a possible abduction near River Avenue and Donald Street. A man had been seen forcing a woman into a vehicle, according to a WPS news release.

Officers located a green 2023 Ford Bronco matching the caller's description in the 400 block of River Avenue. As they moved to stop it, the driver sped off and struck a parked car.

A pursuit followed. The Bronco then collided with a WPS cruiser near Wellington Crescent. The suspect continued northbound on Langside Street, ran a stop sign at Broadway Avenue, and struck a westbound Mitsubishi Outlander.

"The force of the collision resulted in the civilian vehicle colliding with the front of a building in the 600 block of Broadway," the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) said in its release. "The suspect's vehicle spun out of control and collided with two parked cars and was rendered inoperable."

Occupants of the Outlander were taken to hospital. A female passenger suffered a fractured rib and a concussion. A passenger from the suspect's vehicle was also hospitalized.

The driver, an 18-year-old man, was arrested at the scene.

The IIU, Manitoba's independent police watchdog, is leading the investigation and is asking witnesses or anyone with video footage to come forward.
