A police officer's vehicle on Bonaire was shot at in an incident that Caribbean Netherlands Police Force (KPCN) Chief of Police Alwyn Braaf has described as "a grave matter," according to 721news Sint Maarten. The investigation is in its initial stage and is being conducted thoroughly and decisively, Braaf stated.
"Violence, threats, and intimidation against police officers are completely unacceptable," Braaf said in his statement. "Our officers must be able to do their work safely, without being threatened, intimidated, or attacked." The KPCN stands firmly behind its personnel and remains committed to their safety and protection.
Braaf also addressed the broader issue of illegal firearms, calling them a direct threat to community safety. The illegal possession and use of firearms, as well as using weapons to threaten others, are matters the force takes seriously. KPCN said it will continue working to locate and remove illegal firearms from the streets.
The chief left no room for ambiguity regarding the force's response to those who target officers. "Anyone who uses violence against our personnel, threatens them, or attempts to intimidate them will not cause us to back down," Braaf said. The KPCN pledged to continue operating professionally and within the boundaries of the law whilst taking firm action against those who cross the line.
Braaf concluded by reaffirming the force's core mission: to serve and protect the community — a commitment he said would not be shaken by acts of intimidation.
