During today's hearing, two suspects were brought before the court. Earlier, according to the court schedule, eight people were scheduled, and in total around fourteen suspects were in pre-trial detention. The Public Prosecutor has not confirmed this latter number. The pro-forma hearing is intended to clarify the dossier, discuss the status of the investigation and set a timeline for further legal proceedings.
The Public Prosecutor describes the judicial investigation as exceptionally complex. During earlier hearings on 4 December, the judge already emphasised that multiple pieces of evidence still require further examination and that not all suspects are fully cooperating. Crucial material, including hospital camera footage, was still missing from the dossier, which has hindered the reconstruction of events.
Two cases related to the investigation are being handled substantively for the first time today. The court established that the case against suspect Q. de P. comes first, followed by the case against U.S.S. Justice considers these dossiers less complex than the remaining cases within the investigation, which is why they can be handled substantively sooner.
For the remaining suspects, further pro-forma hearings are scheduled in March. The progress of the investigation will be discussed at these hearings and consideration given to additional evidence. The legal proceedings are therefore at the beginning of an intensive phase, in which the role of the various parties involved must be determined step by step.
