The Police Investigations Service (PDI) recaptured Néstor Jair Quiñónez Hernández, a 21-year-old Colombian citizen convicted to 10 years imprisonment for homicide, on Monday at midday, after he fled on Friday during a judicial permit in Copiapó, according to lacuarta.com.
Quiñónez was serving his sentence in a closed facility in Copiapó when the Guarantee Court authorised him to leave without shackles or leg irons to attend his son's christening, guarded only by two establishment staff members. During the family gathering, the young man eluded the staff and escaped.
"Police officers from the Homicide Brigade carried out a series of investigative proceedings on instructions from the Atacama Public Prosecutor's Office, after it was confirmed that a 21-year-old Colombian citizen had fled the municipality of Copiapó last Friday," declared prefect Víctor Toledo, chief of the Copiapó Provincial Police Headquarters.
Toledo added that "the inquiries made it possible to locate the fugitive from justice in a settlement located in the municipality of Antofagasta".
During the operation, officers also detained eight other people who could have provided assistance to Quiñónez in his escape and concealment.
