PDI detains man over clandestine slaughtering and animal cruelty in Placilla, Valparaíso

A police operation at a property in the Placilla Nuevo sector, in the Valparaíso Region, ended with one man detained and eight animals rescued in conditions of severe animal cruelty, according to login.cl. The operation was carried out by detectives from the Investigative Brigade for Environmental Crimes and Cultural Heritage (Bidema) of the Investigative Police (PDI).
Upon arriving at the premises, officers found two greyhound dogs tied to a tree with chains, without access to water and in a malnourished state, completely exposed to weather conditions.
Inside the property, the situation was even more grave. In a pen of approximately 2x2 metres, six pigs were confined without food and in conditions of zero hygiene. The prosecutor of the Regional On-Duty Prosecution Office of Investigation and Flagrancy, Roberto Depaux, described the discovery: "Six pigs were found in a deplorable state of preservation, where their waste prevented normal movement of said animals".
An inspection of the premises also revealed that the location operated as a clandestine slaughtering centre. Among the seized evidence were cutting tools, restraining hooks, a hanging scale, biological remains, frozen meat and the body of an already slaughtered animal. Initial PDI investigations suggest that the accused processed and sold pork illegally.
The rescued animals were placed under care following the operation, through logistical support arrangements. The detainee faces charges for animal cruelty and violation of Law 11.564, which sanctions clandestine slaughterhouses.
Prosecutor Depaux confirmed the procedural steps: "It was ordered that the accused be brought to detention review tomorrow, for purposes of his respective formalisation".
