A Prague court ruled on Wednesday in the case of a 20-year-old man who repeatedly threatened fellow students with shooting at the Faculty of Philosophy of Charles University. He received a five-month sentence suspended for twenty months.
The incidents occurred in December 2023. According to the indictment, the student threatened on several occasions to shoot up his entire classroom. In addition, he brought weapons to school including a telescopic baton and knives. Following a Christmas attack at the same faculty in which fourteen people died, he approved of this act.
The judge found the defendant guilty of dangerous threatening and approval of a criminal act. He originally faced up to three years in prison. She justified the lighter sentence on the grounds that he had no prior convictions and had begun attending therapy.
The defendant denied guilt. He claimed that his statements were not meant as threats and condemned the Christmas attacker. According to him, it was merely inappropriate humour.
The court also ordered him to complete psychotherapy and submit to supervision by a probation officer. He filed an appeal against the verdict.
