The Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) initiated an internal supervision procedure to investigate whether queries made about people's health data were sufficiently justified. The case originated from an investigation into a murder that took place in Suure-Lähtr.
In addition to queries submitted by e-mail, police officers gained automatic access via X-tee to the data of hundreds of people. Such broad data access raised concerns regarding personal data protection.
Legal counsel Carri Ginter from Sorainen law firm noted after reviewing responses received from the PPA that police can access people's health data without their consent. This raises questions about the limits of data protection and procedural law in criminal investigations.
