Police received tips from residents and detected an illegal cannabis cultivation in an apartment in a Lasnamäe panel building. The premises were fitted with special growing tents, a ventilation system and artificial lighting, according to PM Online.
Artur Kamnerov, head of the narcotics and organised crime unit at the North Prefecture, noted that conducting such activities in an ordinary residential building is extremely dangerous. The characteristic odour of the plants easily spreads to all nearby areas, making it only a matter of time before it comes to light.
During the police search, 1.5 kilograms of already dried cannabis and over twenty plants still developing were found. With this quantity, approximately 2,000 people could have been intoxicated. If the substance had been sold in smaller quantities, it would have generated over €30,000 in revenue.
The 37-year-old person operating at the crime scene had not previously come to the attention of police. In addition to the legal violation, such activity is also energy-intensive — the man's utility bills were likely unusually high as a result.
According to expert Katri Abel-Ollo from the Health Development Institute, cannabis remains the most prevalent banned intoxicant in Estonia. "Both wastewater analysis and surveys of schoolchildren and adults show that it holds firmly in first place. Approximately one-third of people have tried illegal drugs in their lifetime, and the majority of them tried cannabis. The trend does not show a decline; rather, consumption is growing year on year," she commented.
