Civil Guard has "adequate leads" to identify driver who hit and fled in Vilanova de Arousa
A 68-year-old man died after being hit by a vehicle in the Tremoedo parish and the driver fled the scene. ABC reports that the Government sub-delegate in Pontevedra says officers are pursuing concrete leads.
Eight fatal hit-and-run incidents in Pontevedra in five months, with one driver still at large
According to ABC, the Civil Guard is making progress in identifying the driver who struck a pedestrian in the parish of Tremoedo, in Vilanova de Arousa, and fled without stopping. The victim, a 68-year-old man with the initials J.O.R., was left lying on the road; emergency services were unable to save his life.
The hit-and-run occurred in the early hours of Saturday, around four in the morning, on the PO-530 road as it passes through Tremoedo, where local festivities were being celebrated that night. It was a member of the public who alerted 112 Galicia: the vehicle involved struck the pedestrian and continued on without stopping.
On Monday, the Government sub-delegate in the province of Pontevedra, Abel Losada, stated that officers have "adequate leads" to locate the alleged perpetrator. Losada provided no further details about the driver's identity or the state of the investigation.
Second fatal hit-and-run the same weekend in Sanxenxo
The same weekend saw another fatal accident in the province. In Sanxenxo, a car mounted the pavement and hit three people, killing a 37-year-old woman who was walking with her family. Her mother and daughter were injured and were taken to the Montecelo hospital complex in Pontevedra; their injuries are not considered serious in principle.
"Unprecedented" figures in the province
With the cases of Vilanova de Arousa and Sanxenxo, Pontevedra province has now recorded eight fatal hit-and-run incidents so far in 2026. Losada described these figures as "totally extraordinary and unprecedented". The most tragic year in recent times had been 2019, with five pedestrians killed throughout the entire year; now that record is far exceeded in just the first five months.
In contrast, no motorcyclists have died in the province during the same period. Losada, according to Europa Press, recalled that the Civil Guard maintains specific controls on this group and that the fines imposed have reached record figures, which in his view demonstrates that the measures are having an effect.
Appeal for caution in a province with dispersed population
The sub-delegate called on citizens to exercise extreme caution both when crossing and when walking on roads or areas near the roadway. Pontevedra province has particular geographical and social characteristics—dispersed and ageing population—that make pedestrian hit-and-run incidents one of its main road safety problems.
