Spanish police have searched the headquarters of the ruling Socialist Party in Madrid with a court order, investigating an alleged illegal financial scheme.

Spanish police entered the headquarters of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in Madrid on Wednesday with a court order. The objective was to gather information about a possible illegal financial scheme linked to a former party member, according to public television RTVE.
Leire Díez is accused of irregular payments related to the state holding company SEPI, which participates in the management of some strategic companies. This operation comes two days after a judge in another case known as "Plus Ultra" summoned former government president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero to testify as a witness, under investigation for alleged crimes of influence peddling and money laundering. Previously, proceedings had already been opened against the wife of current president Pedro Sánchez for influence peddling.
Police had already accessed the PSOE headquarters in Madrid on 20 June 2025, when then party secretary Santos Cerdán was accused of alleged manipulation of public works contracts, although on that occasion the information request referred only to that Socialist leader.
These recent scandals could damage President Sánchez, who has been in power since 2018 and will face parliamentary elections next year.
On Wednesday Sánchez was at the Vatican in a meeting with the Pope.
The leader of the conservative opposition, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, told reporters that Sánchez should call early elections.
