A police officer recently assigned to the Caribbean island was arrested last week by investigators from the IGPN. Following his detention, he was charged with corruption and money laundering offences, then transferred to mainland France.
On Sunday 14 June, around the end of the afternoon, the suspect was removed from Ducos prison to be transported to La Santé remand centre in the south of the French capital. The following day, he was expected for a hearing before four judges at the Paris Palais de Justice.
This procedure stems from a judicial inquiry led by an investigating magistrate from the Paris court. The latter had issued a warrant for arrest targeting the civil servant, accused of involvement in a financial crime network with complex ramifications.
The local prosecutor's office refused to comment publicly, citing the ongoing judicial investigation secrecy.
The arrest sparked comments within the public security force based in the archipelago. A union spokesperson emphasised that the defendant enjoyed the presumption of innocence, whilst acknowledging that accusations weighed against him and that he would be obliged to answer before the courts. Disciplinary measures could be taken in parallel depending on the outcome of the investigation.
