Café manager at Les Deux-Alpes to be tried for antisemitic remarks in March 2027
The owner of a café at Les Deux-Alpes (Isère) will appear before the Grenoble criminal court on 2 March 2027 for public insults of a religious character.
Antisemitic remarks at Les Deux-Alpes: a manager referred to criminal court
The owner of a café-restaurant at the Les Deux-Alpes resort in Isère will be tried on 2 March 2027 before the Grenoble criminal court for "discriminatory public insults against an individual on grounds of their religion", according to BFM TV. The Grenoble prosecutor's office announced these prosecutions on Wednesday 2 September.
The incident dates back to 14 August. The shopkeeper had accosted a customer, who had filmed her before distributing the video on social networks, where it rapidly went viral. She can be heard declaring: "The Jewish community, there are too many of you (…) At some point, it gets too much for people."
The prosecutor's office initiated proceedings following an investigation, before summoning the manager before the criminal court, it said in a statement.
Les Deux-Alpes is among those French Alpine ski resorts that have been popular for decades by members of the Orthodox Jewish community during the summer season.
The day after the incident, on 15 August, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez and the minister responsible for Combating Discrimination Aurore Bergé condemned the remarks made by the manager. "No antisemitic act, no racist act, no act of hatred should be tolerated", Bergé had declared.
