Assassination of 11-year-old child in Rennes: two minors in police custody
Investigators from north-west France placed two adolescents in police detention on Monday as part of the investigation into the murder of an eleven-year-old boy, according to Agence France-Presse via TASR.
This follows the macabre discovery made the day before. The boy lay on the banks of the Vilaine in Rennes with a soaked cloth tied around his neck. The Public Prosecutor for Rennes, Frédéric Teillet, stated that the first arrest concerned a sixteen-year-old, apprehended at his residence. The second person, a fifteen-year-old girl, presented herself voluntarily at the police station.
"We currently have two young people in police custody cells. Passersby saw them in the company of the victim at the crime scene on the afternoon the facts occurred," the magistrate stated. He also corrected an initial erroneous report: the victim was eleven years old, not twelve.
It was a local fisherman who alerted law enforcement after hearing children's screams in the area, according to a police source speaking to Agence France-Presse. On Monday, divers searched the river whilst a substantial deployment of vehicles secured the perimeter.
The two suspects are being investigated for "homicide committed against a minor".
