Chevaline massacre: weapon discovered in Lake Annecy, analysis begins
A Luger P06 pistol was discovered at the bottom of Lake Annecy a few days ago as part of the investigation into the Chevaline massacre. According to BFM TV, the Cold Case Unit of Nanterre (PCSNE), which is handling the case, has confirmed the information, initially revealed by Marianne.
This model of weapon corresponds to the one that could have been used by the shooter during the massacre of 5 September 2012. On that day, three members of a British family and a French cyclist were shot dead on a forest road near Chevaline, in Haute-Savoie.
The authorities do not yet know whether this pistol is the murder weapon. The analysis is expected to be lengthy and complex: as the weapon has been submerged, investigators will need to examine its calibre in particular. The three investigating judges in charge of the case have initiated expert assessments which could extend over several weeks.
Nearly 14 years after the events, despite an international-scale investigation, neither the motive nor the identity of the shooter has been established. The suspect has still not been identified.
