Murder of 11-year-old Lyhanna: suspect was free despite previous reports
The murder of an eleven-year-old child, known by the name Lyhanna, is currently provoking a wave of anger across France. The suspect, a man in his forties, was moving freely although law enforcement had already received several reports concerning him for acts of a sexual nature.
Rallies have taken place in several French cities. On Monday, more than sixty thousand people took to the streets to demand the resignation of the Justice Minister, Gérald Darmanin, who headed the Interior Ministry for four years and therefore also oversaw the police.
The family of the young victim has filed a complaint against the State. According to those close to her, a more forceful intervention by the authorities would have saved the child's life.
Lyhanna disappeared on 29 May near Fleurance, a small municipality of approximately six thousand inhabitants located eighty kilometres from Toulouse. In the following days, hundreds of police officers and volunteers participated in the search. Her body was discovered a week later in a disused grain silo, between two villages in the Gers department.
The suspect, Jérôme Barella, was arrested three days after the girl's disappearance. This tragedy occurs in a context where France has experienced a series of cases of violence against children in recent months, including those involving personnel working in schools and early childhood facilities.
