A pilot from airline SAS has been sentenced to ten months in prison with suspension and one year's ban from flying over French territory. This decision follows a drug test carried out at Nice airport.
The man, who is middle-aged, was arrested on Wednesday on the Nice tarmac. An aircraft from the Scandinavian airline had just landed after a flight from Copenhagen. Officers from the French air police carried out a random check covering alcohol and drugs.
When the analysis revealed the presence of cocaine in the blood of the captain, he was taken into police custody without delay. The regional newspaper Nice-Matin reports that he has since been tried and convicted.
The scheduled flight to Arlanda airport in Sweden, with new passengers on board, had to be cancelled.
The communications director of SAS, Alexandra Lindgren Kaoukji, told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet that this matter is now in the hands of the authorities and police.
