A specialist criminal court dealing with serious crimes ruled on Thursday on a matter of extreme gravity. A man in his fifties has received the ultimate sentence for three homicides committed in 2022 in the Somme prefecture.
Jérôme D., aged 52, has been found guilty of murdering his partner Jennifer, 26, their three-year-old son, and the latter's younger sister, Amélia, 25. The jury also held him responsible for sexual assault against both women and unlawful confinement of his sister-in-law.
The tragedy unfolded in April 2022. The accused admitted to taking his partner's life following an altercation. The following day, he served breakfast to his son before smothering him with a pillow. Forty-eight hours after the first death, he lured his sister-in-law to the family home where the two bodies already lay. He held her captive for two days, abused her, then killed her.
During the trial, the public prosecutor's representative characterised the acts as "infinite violence", emphasising the horror of a father eliminating his own child. The accused attempted suicide several times after the crimes: an insulin overdose, use of an electric stapler, then a deliberate car accident. His arrest could only take place fifteen days later, whilst he was hospitalised.
His lawyers highlighted his bipolar disorder and the cessation of his medical treatment several months before the crimes, replaced by excessive alcohol consumption. Before the jury, the man asked for forgiveness from the victims' relatives, whilst admitting to the unforgivable.
The sentence handed down corresponds to the public prosecutor's submissions. The mother of the two young women expressed her distress upon leaving the courtroom, considering the minimum custodial term insufficient. Her counsel recalled that it was nonetheless the severest punishment provided for by law.
