Ivorian striker Eli Wahi, aged 23, was taken into custody on 29 May by French authorities as part of an investigation into alleged involvement in an illegal sports betting network, according to information from media outlet The Athletic.

The OGC Nice striker is the subject of a preliminary investigation concerning a yellow card he is alleged to have deliberately received during the match on 17 May against FC Metz. This match had generated significant betting activity.

The Ivorian was questioned by French authorities, but at this stage no charges have been brought against him, which allowed him to travel to the United States to play in his team's match against Inter Miami.

The investigation is ongoing and, according to the same source, a second player who participated in the World Cup is the subject of a preliminary investigation for involvement in an illegal sports betting network and match manipulation.
