The Central Investigative Prosecutor's Office has charged twelve additional people in the Óbuda bribery case, bringing the total number of suspects to 32. Eight of them are currently being held in custody.
Twelve new suspects in Óbuda corruption case, eight in custody
The Central Investigative Prosecutor's Office (KNYF) questioned twelve additional people as suspects in the so-called Óbuda corruption case, the authority announced. This brings the total number of people charged as suspects in the proceedings to thirty-two. Eight of those freshly questioned are currently in custody, with the court to rule on their detention on Thursday.
According to the investigation, the owner of a company engaged in park maintenance provided regular payments to local leaders at several Budapest municipal administrations between 2011 and 2024. In exchange for the money, the company expected support in obtaining contracts and in the favourable arrangement of contractual terms. The amounts paid exceed two billion forints.
In the third district, the entrepreneur gave money to Péter Puskás, the deputy mayor, who shared it with Gergő Czeglédy, a socialist representative. Following the political shift, the distribution ratio changed. In the second district, mayors Zsolt Láng and later Gergely Őrsi also received payments. According to the prosecution, the entrepreneur also made continuous payments to Zsolt Molnár, a former member of parliament, so that the socialist party leader could exert his influence on municipal representatives.
According to another branch of the investigation, a public catering company also acquired influence in a similar manner. Through this, István Kőhegyi, a politician from Pécs, also obtained money.
On Tuesday, investigators carried out a coordinated operation. They conducted searches at multiple locations and seized cash and moveable property worth tens of millions of forints. Besides the criminal proceedings, a proceeds recovery investigation is also underway.
