The Central Investigation Prosecutor's Office has brought charges against Ferenc Biró on suspicion of breach of duty, abuse of authority and forging public documents.
Charges brought against head of Integrity Authority
The Central Investigation Prosecutor's Office (KNYF) brought charges against Ferenc Biró on Tuesday, who held the position of president of the Integrity Authority – according to 24.hu.
The prosecution accuses him of three criminal offences: abuse of authority, forging public documents, and breach of duty causing particularly significant financial damage. According to the prosecution, the proceedings resulted in damage of more than 140 million forints.
Bertalan Havasi, the communications director of Fidesz, responded to the event in a statement. According to him, every statement by Ferenc Biró criticising the government was made because of his own corruption case, and the president is attacking because the prosecution is holding him accountable.
Ferenc Biró called the prosecution's action a show trial. In an interview published on Sunday evening, he spoke about how the Orbán government put pressure on him when they saw that his office was actually attempting to oversee the use of EU funds in Hungary.
The Integrity Authority was established at the European Union's request, and its task is to fight corruption and supervise the management of Community funds.
