Today, criminal proceedings continued in Riga Regional Court against a man who is in the dock charged with murdering his mother whilst under the influence of narcotic substances.
The first-instance court initially sentenced the defendant to life imprisonment. It also ordered him to pay compensation of €50,000 for moral damage to the aggrieved party.
Information provided by the prosecution indicates that the man killed his mother with pronounced cruelty. On 13 May 2024, whilst in an intoxicated state, he arrived at the woman's private house. There he struck her on the head at least five times with a hard blunt object and struck her body at least three times.
The defendant then began strangling his mother, which caused mechanical asphyxiation. Later he took a sharp object and cut the woman's throat.
The charges also include cruelty to an animal. After killing his mother, the man used a sharp object to cut the throat of her dog.
In his testimony, the defendant stated that his actions were caused by hallucinations, which resulted from narcotic substance use.
During the pre-trial investigation, it was established that the individual was able to understand his actions and control them, according to the charges.
