The State Police have completed their investigation into a robbery that took place in Daugavpils in late June — three unknown men pulled a bag over a victim's head and stole his handbag. The criminal case materials were referred to the prosecutor on 21 August for the initiation of criminal proceedings, according to a statement from the State Police (VP) cited by the Delfi.lv portal.
The incident occurred on 27 June in the courtyard of a Daugavpils residential district near a retail shop. The victim is a man born in 1962. The stolen handbag contained a personal passport, a bank card, a wristwatch and a mobile phone.
The investigation established that three men had previously followed the victim and approached him from behind. One of the assailants, using force, pulled a bag over the man's head, while another stole the handbag.
VP officers responded immediately: two suspects were arrested on 27 June itself, and the third person was arrested later. All three arrested persons were subjected to a security measure not involving deprivation of liberty.
Criminal proceedings were initiated under Article 176, Part 2 of the Criminal Law — for robbery committed by a group of persons pursuant to a prior agreement or in a significant amount. Such a criminal act carries a sentence of imprisonment of up to eight years with or without confiscation of property, as well as probation supervision for up to three years.
VP reminds that no one is considered guilty until guilt is proved in the manner prescribed by law.
