Police have completed their investigation into a case in which the dismembered remains of a person were found in an apartment in Jūrmala. A female relative of the deceased has been detained on suspicion of the crime.

On 12 September 2025, operational services arrived at an apartment in Jūrmala following reports of a man born in 1951 going missing. He had not been seen since July, and was known to frequent that address. Upon entering the premises, law enforcement detected a strong foul odour. The apartment presented a horrifying scene – several bags contained dismembered objects from a bed, as well as fragments that appeared to resemble human tissue.
An examination conducted by experts confirmed that the discovered remains indeed belonged to the missing man. A dead dog, wrapped in blankets, was also found in the apartment. During the search, various household items were seized, including kitchen utensils and a meat grinder. Biological material from the deceased was found on all of them.
On the day of the incident, police detained a woman born in 1982, who turned out to be a relative of the deceased. She had no previous criminal history. During the investigation, the woman was ordered to undergo a psychiatric examination on an outpatient basis.
Criminal proceedings were initiated for murder and improper treatment of an unburied corpse. In December 2025, a court decided to place the woman in a medical facility pending a decision on forced treatment.
On 3 June this year, the case was transferred to the Pierīga Prosecutor's Office to continue proceedings regarding compulsory medical measures.
The State Police emphasise that guilt must be proven in accordance with procedures established by law.
