Woman in Jūrmala suspected of killing and dismembering relative
On 12 September 2025, law enforcement officers arrived at a dwelling by the sea after receiving information that a man born in 1951, who had not been seen since mid-summer, was residing there. Upon entering the premises, officers detected an unpleasant smell. In one of the rooms they found bags containing cut sections of mattress, bedding items, paper napkins and, disturbingly, sections of human skin and pieces of soft tissue.
Forensic medical specialists examined the remains found and concluded that these remains belonged to the missing 74-year-old man. He had spent a considerable amount of time in this same flat.
A woman born in 1982, who is a relative of the deceased, has been taken into custody on suspicion of this crime. She had no previous police record. During the investigation, she was ordered to undergo psychiatric examination on an outpatient basis.
During the flat inspection, law enforcement officers also found a dried-out dog wrapped in bedding. Continuing the search, kitchen items were removed — chopping boards, an axe, knives, a plate, scissors and a meat grinder. DNA from the deceased man was detected on all of these items. His biological remains were also identified on the meat grinder.
Criminal proceedings have been commenced against the person in custody under the Criminal Law provisions for murder and desecration of a dead body. On 18 December 2025, the court decided to place them in a medical institution pending a decision on forced treatment.
On 3 June this year, the Riga region criminal police completed the investigation and sent the case to the Pierīga prosecutor's office, proposing continuation of proceedings for forced medical measures.
We remind that no person is to be considered guilty until a court has delivered a verdict.
