A woman born in 1982, with no previous police record, is now suspected of committing a violent crime against her relative. On 12 September 2025, officers from the State Police went to a flat in Jūrmala, where they detected an odour indicating a decomposition process.
Upon entering the premises, operational staff saw several bags containing fragments of human skin, soft tissue fragments, as well as cut-up mattresses, blankets, pillows and bedding. Forensic examination later confirmed that the body parts found belonged to a man born in 1951, whose disappearance had been reported missing since July 2025.
In the same flat, law enforcement officers found a mummified dog, which was wrapped in blankets and sleeping bags. During the search, kitchen knives, an axe, meat cutting boards, scissors and a meat grinder were removed — biological material from the deceased was detected on all of these items.
The woman suspected of the crime was detained at the scene. She was ordered to undergo outpatient forensic psychiatric examination. On 18 December 2025, the court decided to place the woman in a medical facility pending a decision on the application of compulsory medical measures of a medical nature.
Criminal proceedings were initiated under Article 116 of the Criminal Law (murder) and Part One of Article 228 of the Criminal Law (desecration of an unburied corpse). On 3 June 2026, the case was transferred to the Pierīga Prosecutor's Office, where police propose to continue proceedings in order to determine compulsory medical measures of a medical nature for the woman suspected of the crime.
