Anti-drugs operatives in Peru's capital executed an unusual arrest during the opening ceremony of the world championship. The operation took place on Friday 12 June at a residence in Lima.
Members of the Green Squadron, a body dedicated to combating crime and illicit trafficking of substances in the city, decided to exploit their target's passion for football. After investigating his habits, they confirmed he was a compulsive sports follower, absorbed by the atmosphere of the tournament.
Taking advantage of this information, the uniformed officers went to the home of Carlos Cabrera—nicknamed "Pichichi" after the award given to the most prolific goalscorer in the local championship—dressed in the costumes of two animated figures from the sporting event. The moose representing Canada and the birds of prey emblematic of the United States allowed the police to enter without raising suspicion whilst the suspect followed the broadcast of the opening ceremony.
Once inside, the intervention team managed to apprehend the man and seized thousands of packets of cocaine paste, dried cannabis, a pistol, ammunition and a substantial bundle of banknotes.
Colonel Carlos Fredy Alcántara Obregón, commanding the detachment, explained to the AP news agency that prior surveillance was key to designing the capture strategy.
