Five arrested for armed attack on Nueva América bus in San Juan de Miraflores

Operation in Villa El Salvador yields five arrests for extortion and bus attack
The Peruvian National Police detained five alleged members of a criminal gang dedicated to extortion and contract killings targeting public transport companies in Lima South on Monday, 24 August, according to larepublica.pe. Those detained are believed to be linked to an attack carried out on 23 August against a Nueva América company bus in San Juan de Miraflores, as well as other similar attacks in the area.
The operation began at approximately 4:00 p.m. and was led by agents from the Extortion Investigation Division (Divinext) of the Dirincri, following intelligence work initiated after a confidential report of extortion was filed.
Officers operated in various locations within the district of Villa El Salvador and succeeded in detaining Erick Rebaza Guillén, Anali Barraza Chuquimajo, Jhonatan Meza Reyes and Jaron Angulo Naranjo. This group was joined by Cristofer Francia Zacata, arrested by personnel from the Depincri VES.
According to the police, the organisation allegedly targeted public transport companies with routes through Villa El Salvador, Villa María del Triunfo and San Juan de Miraflores.
During the raids, officers seized two pistols—a PB 9 mm short calibre and a Browning—both with loaded magazines. They also found ammunition of various calibres, 1,200 soles in cash and six mobile phones.
The police are investigating whether the seized weapons were used in the attacks against transport companies in Lima South, and whether the mobile devices contain communications linked to the alleged extortions.
The five detainees are being investigated for their alleged participation in the attack on Sunday, 23 August against the Nueva América bus, when the vehicle was circulating through San Juan de Miraflores. A man on a motorcycle allegedly fired directly at the vehicle; the driver was wounded by gunshot to the leg and was taken to a health centre.
The investigation also seeks to determine the responsibility of those arrested in other attacks registered against transport companies operating in Lima South. The police indicated that the operation continues and that they will report on the progress of proceedings.
