Peru police detain suspected drug trafficker disguised as World Cup mascots
Peruvian police officers carried out a special operation against a suspected drug trafficker using disguises of the mascots of the FIFA World Cup Championship. The operation was conducted in a neighbourhood of Lima during the celebration of the international tournament.
According to the operation's commanding officer, the suspect was a football enthusiast who lived immersed in World Cup euphoria. For this reason, the officers decided to dress in the official mascot costumes of the tournament to approach the man's residence without raising suspicion.
The championship mascots represent the three host countries: a caribou for Canada, a jaguar for Mexico, and a bald eagle for the United States. The officers took advantage of the festive atmosphere of the sporting event to camouflage their intervention.
The detainee is under investigation for alleged participation in drug trafficking. The authorities did not reveal further details about the amount of drugs seized or about possible accomplices in the criminal network.
