An assault occurred at the Łódź-Żabieniec railway station in late May. A woman who had just stepped off a train was walking down the stairs when the attacker kicked her in the head. She fell to the ground.
The victim received medical treatment for a head contusion, haematoma and broken rib. A medical examiner determined that the injuries sustained excluded her from normal functioning for a period longer than a week. Such a qualification constitutes an offence under Article 157 of the Penal Code, for which punishment ranges from three months to five years' imprisonment.
CCTV footage captured the entire incident. Officers established the perpetrator's identity and apprehended him ten days later. The forty-one-year-old man had previously been recorded for a series of violent offences—assaults, assault on a police officer, and threats. The total sentence he has served amounts to six years.
Due to the repetitive nature of the criminal conduct, the Łódź prosecutor's office brought charges against him for assault under hooliganism provisions, acting in public and without just cause, in circumstances of multiple recidivism. The maximum sentence reaches eight years and six months' deprivation of liberty.
Investigators intend to request that he be remanded in custody. They argue this is justified by the possibility of the suspect fleeing before the imposition of such a severe sentence.
During interrogation, the man admitted his guilt. He explained that he intervened because he thought the victim was reaching for his partner's bag. However, no evidence supports this version of events.
