The District Court in Białystok has sentenced three Ukrainian citizens to custodial sentences for smuggling a large consignment of cigarettes across the Polish-Belarusian border.

The District Court in Białystok imposed custodial sentences on three men from Ukraine. They were found guilty of smuggling a significant quantity of cigarettes across the state border with Belarus.
One of the defendants was sentenced to one year and three months in prison. A second received a sentence of ten months. The third was sentenced to six months. All three had been on bail pending trial.
The offence occurred in February of this year. Officers of the Nadbużański Border Guard Division detained the men in the area of the border crossing in Czeremsh. During inspection, it was found that they were transporting a large consignment of cigarettes without Polish excise stamps in their vehicle.
Border guards established that the goods had been smuggled from the territory of Belarus. The men had no documentation confirming the legality of transport or payment of the required taxes.
During court proceedings, it was proved that the three Ukrainian citizens acted jointly and in agreement. The aim of the offence was to achieve financial gain through the sale of illegal goods on the black market.
The judgment is not final. The parties have the right to lodge an appeal.
