Ganja Trafficking Charges Dismissed Against Cosmetologist and Soldier in Demerara

A cosmetologist and a Guyana Defence Force soldier have been freed of cannabis trafficking charges at Providence Magistrate's Court. The case was dismissed after police failed to prove the elements of the charge.

Charges dropped at Providence Magistrate's Court

According to stabroeknews.com, Niketa Bishop, 30, and Jamal Eastman, 24, have been acquitted of a cannabis trafficking charge after Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman dismissed the case on Monday.

Bishop, a cosmetologist of Lot 1212 Diamond Grove, East Bank Demerara, and Eastman, a serving member of the Guyana Defence Force at the same address, had been accused of possessing 380 grammes (0.8 of a pound) of cannabis for trafficking on November 5th at that location.

Both defendants denied the charge when it was first read to them by Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus, and maintained their innocence throughout the trial.

Magistrate Latchman dismissed the charge on the grounds that the police were unable to prove the necessary elements of the offence.
