A 48-year-old man charged with murdering a 74-year-old woman in Portsmouth has also been charged with assaulting an emergency worker, ca.news.yahoo.com reports.

Police discovered the body of Carole Langley in Cyprus Road on Monday morning, after responding to a report of a "domestic incident." Scott Langley, of St Pauls Road in Southsea, appeared at a preliminary hearing at Winchester Crown Court on Friday.

The judge indicated the case would likely be transferred to Portsmouth Crown Court, and Langley was remanded in custody until a further hearing later this year.

Carole Langley's family, in a statement issued through Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police, described her as someone who would be "sorely missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her."

"Her love, kindness and beautiful memories will live on in all of us," the statement read. The family also thanked those who had sent condolence messages and asked that their privacy be respected.
