One person has died and three others were hospitalised after an 87-year-old driver ran a red light and struck pedestrians in the crosswalk at 4th and Broadway in downtown Nashville, wsmv.com reports.

Thomas Cahill, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was behind the wheel of a Ford Fusion when he failed to stop at the intersection, hitting four people who had the right of way to cross.

The victim who died was identified as Timothy Wedlock, 58, of Australia. Wedlock was transported to hospital but did not survive.

A second victim, a man from Jacksonville, Florida, underwent surgery and is listed in critical condition. A third victim, a woman from Knoxville, is in serious but non-critical condition. The fourth victim, a 58-year-old woman from Parsons, Tennessee, is in critical yet stable condition at Vanderbilt.

Cahill was travelling with his 90-year-old wife and the wife's caregiver at the time of the crash. Both Cahill and his wife were hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries.

The caregiver, who was seated in the backseat, told police she was on the phone when the collision occurred. She said she looked up upon hearing pedestrians being struck.

Downtown surveillance cameras captured the moment the Ford Fusion collided with the pedestrians. Investigators have not yet determined what led to the crash; police said Cahill showed no signs of impairment.

The Metro Nashville Police Department's Traffic Division is leading the investigation.

Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell issued a statement describing the incident as "an incredibly tragic event." O'Connell said his thoughts were with the victims and their families, adding that first responders and medical professionals were working to aid those injured. "Right now, it's unclear why the 87-year-old driver failed to stop for the pedestrians in the crosswalk," he said.
