New Castle Man Charged with Felony Assault After Injuring Two Troopers at Traffic Stop

New Castle Man Fights Troopers, Damages Police Vehicle During Saturday Traffic Stop

Delaware State Police arrested Nolan Lewis, 39, of New Castle, on felony assault and related charges after he injured two troopers during a traffic stop Saturday evening, dsp.delaware.gov reported on Sunday.

At approximately 7:00 p.m. on September 19, 2026, troopers were patrolling North Dupont Highway near Hessler Boulevard when they observed a Mitsubishi Lancer being driven without a registration plate. They pulled the vehicle over and identified the driver as Lewis.

During the stop, troopers established that the Mitsubishi was unregistered and carried no insurance. A further check revealed that Lewis had multiple active capiases issued against him by various Delaware courts.

When troopers moved to take Lewis into custody, he resisted and fought with the officers. During the struggle he damaged personal property belonging to a trooper as well as Delaware State Police property. After being secured and placed inside a police vehicle, Lewis continued to kick, damaging the vehicle.

A subsequent search of the Mitsubishi turned up a large knife concealed inside the car.

Both troopers suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were treated and released at the scene. Lewis was transported to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the incident and was later discharged.

Lewis was then taken to Troop 2, where he was charged, arraigned by the Justice of the Peace Court, and committed to the Department of Correction on a $7,000 secured bond, in addition to the outstanding capiases.

Any individual charged is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
